SHE Day: Phoenix
Sunny, hot, and welcoming. We couldn’t have asked for a better day to connect with the women of the Phoenix, AZ area and celebrate sustainable, healthy, ethical living! The theme for this SHE Day was that small changes make big differences…. which we believe in deeply at SHE Changes Everything.
Attendees started the day with coffee or “bean-spiration” from coffee roasted locally and generously donated by Bergie’s Coffee Roast House and then served up by the Organic Bean Cafe (operated by the nicest mother-daughter duo you’ll ever meet!). You have to check out both cafes if you live in the Phoenix area!
MORNING WORKSHOP/DEMO: Try the World’s Best Matcha Latte!
There was a tasting / demo of matcha lattes from Bri Reesing, founder of Beach Life Organic and host of Critical Conversations. She made a custom iced version with lavender, high-quality collegen from Vital Proteins, smooth coconut butter from Artisana Organics made only from pure, unadulterated coconut flesh, and matcha from Navitas (right now when you sign up for Navitas’ newsletter you get 20% off your first order!) We love matcha because it is smooth energy source and anti-aging! One cup of Matcha contains more antioxidants than about 10 glasses of green tea!
The iced version was perfect as it was HOT already in the morning with the infamous Phoenix heat.
Fun fact: Bri’s mom, who lives in Phoenix, was able to join us as SHE Day and helped make it possible. We couldn’t have done it without this amazing mother-daughter duo (ACTUALLY Bri’s dad pitched in too! iT WAS A FAMILY EFFORT).
Heather Young, RYT-500-E, C-IAYT, and Jennifer Klotz, MS, RDN, LDN, sisters and co-founders of SHE Changes Everything, greeted everyone and officially opened SHE Day: Phoenix with the inspiration behind small changes that make big differences!
SESSION ONE: Simple Changes with BIG Results
In the first session of the day, Heather shared simple sustainable, healthy, ethical change that actually can have a big impact on our health, on the planet, and on the quality of life of the farmers who grow our food and the workers who make our products.
“The whole day was eye opening. They gave so many small easy things to change!” said one attendee.
SESSION 2: Wellness is in the Why
Jennifer broke down the top five issues that affect women’s health, the most common reason’s they happen, and how to prevent, heal, and reverse them. The women all took a proprietary health quiz to learn which areas of their health they should tackle first!
The session was a hit! Here’s what a few women had to say:
“The session, ‘Wellness is in the Why,” and the quiz was wonderful and incredibly insightful and I know I'm not crazy anymore for listening to my body!”
“The session on health was my favorite because I have seen so many doctors and never heard these important things.”
“Jenn's session on imbalances was powerful. The knowledge she laid out was amazing and I cant wait to delve more into it! Everything was pertinent and it was great to hear it all in one place!”
LUNCH WORKSHOP: Create Your Own Skincare with Take Care Beauty Co.
Over the lunch hour attendees had the chance to make their own skincare - from scratch! Using only pure ingredients and essentials oils in glass bottles! This Phoenix-based company is on a mission to provide natural skincare. The company removes all chemicals and names you can’t pronounce from its products and also gives locals a 15% discount when they bring their used bottles in to be reused or recycled. It’s an extra sustainable step we love so much!
Fun fact: Take Care Beauty’s founder, Selma Nguyen, was 8 months pregnant at SHE Day and her energy and positivity was infectious! She is yet another special woman who helped make SHE Day the incredible day that it was.
Over lunch the women had fun shopping all the sustainable, healthy, ethical vendors in the SHE Marketplace. You can read all about the vendors and why we love them so much here!
Fun Fact: The Soteria Initiative, a Phoenix-based company that uses pennies in jewelry to show survivors of human trafficking that they do have WORTH and to provide them with employment. Its founder, Khue, (shown above) has the cutest 9-month old son. She was one of many mom's on a mission at the event!
After lunch and throughout the day, Heather led the women through several simple mini-movement session using exercises to break up the sitting and showcase simple ways to improve focus, energy, digestion, and more!
SESSION 3 | Wellness Panel: Fads Versus Food Freedom
Panelists Briana Reesing, RN, BSN, CEN, Laura Gluck, RN, and Jennifer Klotz, MS, RDN, LDN tackled diet culture, fads, and practical ways to find food freedom.
“I loved the wellness panel hearing the stories of overcoming obstacles. How the women listened to their bodies, connected to them, and found solutions was so helpful!”
Beautycounter is on a mission to clean up the women's make-up and self care industry and it deserves applauding! We were lucky to have Shea Smith bring the full Beautycounter lineup and also speak and share simple tips for getting started with switching out your makeup and beauty products!
“I loved Shea's talk, she was well spoken, genuinely cared and it's a topic [safer beauty] that I'm interested in learning more about!”
Did you know you can actually shop Beautycounter and support SHE Changes Everything?! We fully support their mission to get safer beauty into the hands of everyone and your purchases give us a small affiliate fee that helps us fund SHE. Their high quality products are made without any of the toxic chemicals most brands have, so you can look good and feel good without worrying about the products you’re using on your skin. We think you’ll love what you find!
Our absolute favorite thing about SHE Day is all the incredible women we meet. There are the women who make it possible - the volunteers, the vendors, the speakers, and more. So many women give their time and energy in ways we can never repay them. And then there’s the women who come - they are curious, thoughtful, and on their own individual journeys with their own unique stories and wisdom to share.
We’re grateful for them all… and hope to meet you too someday at a SHE Day!
