Is It Possible to Buy the Change You Want To See?
Whether you’re talking sustainable, healthy, or ethical changes you want to make, overwhelm is often one of the biggest barriers to taking action. Let’s face it, when you turn on the news or read a book, it’s hard not to become frozen by the enormity of the problem… but it is also more specifically usually coupled with outcome fear. “Will this action really work? Will this action even create the results I want?”
We experience this fear in almost every area of our life! Whether you’re contemplating what to do about a new health diagnosis, a job change, social injustice or anything, you’re always faced with the question: “Will my efforts even matter?”
Last night we had the chance to attend the book launch of “Buy the Change You Want to See,” by Jane Mosbacher Morris., founder and CEO of To the Market (another amazing company you should know about!).
We were invited by Elisha Chan, the executive director of Fair Trade LA. “This is right up your alley and affirms what you believe in at SHE Changes Everything,” she said. She was 100% right. And we are so glad we went!
The book is an amazing resource for explaining why harnessing our purchasing power for good really does matter! Not only does the book include simple tips that anyone can take action on… but it also tackles the fear of “Does this even matter?” head on through example after example of how Jane has personally seen someone’s purchase halfway around the world make a difference in another person’s life
“Our purchasing power is like an untapped superpower,” Jane encourages us all in the book - and she knows because shes’ seen the effects work first hand.
Retail is actually a massive force in the U.S. economy - a 2.6 trillion industry!
Jane shares stores of how she’s personally seen people’s lives changed through the power of a purchase (everything from the cup of coffee we drink in the morning to the team t-shirts we order), and offers a much deeper understanding of how many of our favorite products end up in our homes. Too often the process is invisible, which is another reason we doubt the impact possible through retail purchases.
This is a great book on two folds… it gives you practical tips and shows you the areas of your life where you can immediately start creating change through your purchase (plus it breaks down a lot of the terminology you see while shopping and explains it)… and then she brings all the tips and “how to’s” to life by sharing true stories of her travels and the impact she’s witnessed.
You’ll never see the “stuff” you buy the same way again!
You may not think your purchase of a simple birthday gift for a friend or a different brand of coffee for your office may have much power. But for the person you actually bought from… it can be massive for their quality of life, and Jane shows that.
You know our favorite reminder is that “Small changes make BIG differences.” That is true whether you are talking about purchasing power, changes for your health, or practically anything in life!
You’ll find plenty of inspiration for small changes in this book that make you part of the solution.
“Just as the problems of the world can seem overwhelming, so can attempting to change every single thing you buy. None of us can do everything. If you can find one area to work on through your purchasing power, you are part of the solution,” Jane writes.
So is it possible to buy the change you want to see? Jane definitively argues that it is possible in this book… and we agree whole heartedly!
