Athleta is one more big company betting against fast fashion! The company started 2017 by launching a Fair Trade yoga clothing line. As a yoga instructor that can practically live in yoga clothes some weeks, that is a huge deal because it is a “breakthrough” shift as one of the top yoga clothes suppliers is moving to a Fair Trade option.
Fair trade clothes are made in factories that pay the workers a fair wage and ensure safe working conditions.
Some mega companies are honestly paying people pennies for the articles of clothing they sew. Pennies! That's not a fair world - nor anything I want to be a part of when I know alternatives like Athleta exist that are paying fair wages. And as a women, knowing that 63% of garment workers around the world are female, it makes me want to support companies that are creating better opportunities for the women who make my clothes instead of taking advantage of them!
That's the stand that Athleta is taking.
"We’re determined to lessen our impact on the environment and improve the quality of life for women and girls, near and far. That’s why we’re so excited to partner with Fair Trade USA, an organization that works to improve the lives of garment workers (which are mostly women) in several ways. The Fair Trade program empowers them to make their own decisions about how to improve their communities. It ensures healthier and safer work conditions. And it also ensures that factories adhere to rigorous standards, including reducing water, waste and energy usage, and prohibiting child labor," Athleta says about the program.
Every time you buy from the line, Athleta pays an additional premium directly back to the people who made the tank, pant, or bra. Collectively, the workers decide how to spend the money to better their community. They can choose what they need: everything from childcare, to transportation, to women’s health programs, to education.
Doing yoga consistently can have a massive impact on your health - but it can also have an equally powerful impact on the environment (through choosing sustainable fabrics and manufacturing practices) and on the quality of life for the women and men who make your clothes!
Choosing sustainable, fair trade options like the apparel from Athleta turns you into a multi-tasking machine for good during your yoga and sweat sessions! And they said multi-tasking wasn't possible ; )
