Coffee With a Conscience: Cameron's Coffee

When Cameron’s Specialty Coffee, a small-batch coffee company out of Minneapolis founded by Bill Kirkpatrick, reached out to us to try their coffee*, we took a look at what the company stood for and it was a very resounding "Yes!"

Um, asking us to try coffee is like asking us if we laughed at the Chewbacca video - it's a pretty easy "Yes!" : ) If you follow us on InstagramTwitter, or Facebook, you know that coffee always makes our day! 

So you'd think it was the chance to sip an extra cup of coffee, but what really has us excited is the certifications Cameron's Coffee has. We care very deeply about companies that have true, authentic relationship with farmers, eliminate chemical and pesticide usage (coffee is so dirty and nasty for you when these things are not addressed! We do backflips over any company that is conscious enough to eliminate these), preserving the environment, and so much more.

Happily, Cameron's has a serious sustainable focus, and it stems from the passion of founder, Bill Kirkpatrick (read our interview with him!).

"Our philosophy has always been to do the right thing. We do not market heavily what we do in this area – it is simply who we are," Kirkpatrick says.

The company has created a compostable, single-service coffee pod that’s compatible with Keruig and other single serve machines and has been designed to brew a delicious cup of coffee with no plastic taste (or unnecessary plastic exposure) If you're aware of the nightmare that single-serve pods have on the environment, you know that is a big deal! 

Beyond launching BetterBrew Eco Coffee pods, Cameron’s also takes great care to roast its coffee in the most energy efficient ways, including virtually eliminating all water waste in production. Half of our team lived in California, which is in a serious drought, so this really impressed us. Too many of us, especially companies, take protecting clean water for granted! 

In addition to taking sustainability seriously, Cameron’s line of eco-pods include 5 sustainability blends that are certified organic, Rainforest Alliance, Shade Grown and Fairtrade. These are the blends we fully support and recommend as the best choice. Currently, Cameron’s does not have a decaf option in the sustainability blends, but hopefully that will be possible eventually! We take the quality of coffee very seriously. In order to have a SHE impact, it has to be #sustainable, #healthy (both for the person drinking and the person growing it – no nasty pesticides), and #ethical (which is what SHE stands for)! 

So what did we think of the coffee? Here, in no particular order, are our reactions to Cameron's coffee.

Heather Young:
"The quality of coffee is a big deal for me. Like a BIG DEAL. There actually are a lot of studies that show the coffee is not good for you, but often times these studies are not taking the quality of coffee into account. Coffee that is produced with the heavy use of pesticides; coffee that is not processed correctly and ends up having high levels of mold (called mytotoxins) in it; or decaf coffee that is processed with heavy chemicals  (decaffeinated coffee is usually made by rinsing the coffee beans with solvent chemical until most of the caffeine is absorbed, all becomes a high toxic load for your body. Cameron's Coffee takes great care in providing organic, sustainable, healthy, ethical options."

But does it taste good? Great news. YES. It's a big, bold cup of sustainable, healthy, ethical goodness. I love it in a French Press.

My husband uses a Keurig for coffee at work and tried the Organic Breakfast Blend BetterBrew Eco Coffee pods. He noticed an immediate different difference in the richness and flavor of the coffee that was brewed. I'll be ordering the pods for him to use at work now. Knowing they are compost quickly and are organic coffee is huge for me!

Lindsey Raymond: 
"My husband and I have had a lot of family visiting recently to help with our newborn baby girl. We brewed the Organic Breakfast Blend for them (without telling them what it was) and they were convinced that it was part of a secret stash we brought back from our travels. We had to show them the bag to prove it! How thrilled they are to know that they can buy Cameron's right here in the states. Bravo!"

Jennifer Klotz, MS, RD, LDN
"Love at first cup, that is what happened when I first tried Cameron’s Organic French Roast. I love coffee and have tried a LOT of organic coffee brands. The honest answer is; many do not give me the rich espresso flavor I am looking for. Cameron’s did and does. Needless to say, I will be drinking and serving Cameron’s handcrafted coffee at my house from now on! I am so excited that there is a delicious sustainable, organic coffee available. Because coffee should and must be fair trade and organic, not only for your own health, but the health of the planet…but that’s a whole other article!

The one thing I am hoping will change is that Cameron’s does not currently offer a decaf, sustainable, organic coffee YET (positive thinking : ) I am really hoping that changes!! After all, their passion is making a fantastic cup of coffee. Please Cameron’s, you have a life-long fan, now I just need my decaf : )"

Janice Hamm
So my husband is the coffee expert in the house. I love coffee, but Aaron KNOWS about coffee. He knows the stuff the average person doesn't know, like the right temperature you should brew different blends at, the massive difference grind size makes on flavor and boldness, and even the perfect amount of time coffee needs to brew for the best flavor. If he didn't like Cameron's....well, not good. So here's the short version after all the "tests" he put the beans from Cameron's through: He loved it, especially its rich flavor. Watch for his recommended recipe here on SHE soon! ? My review? Ummm, he's making this signature "Cameron" drink for me almost every weekend! Yes, I know I'm a lucky girl.
